On September 11, 2025, members of the Sustainable Business Council (SBC) and guests gathered at Master Gallery Foods (MGF) for a powerful showcase of sustainability in action. The event highlighted how MGF has evolved from isolated sustainability efforts to a deeply integrated, cross-functional strategy that touches every part of the organization, from operations and facilities to leadership and culture.
From Compliance to Commitment
Masters Gallery Foods’s journey began in 2011, and today, sustainability is embedded in its DNA. The company’s ESG commitments go beyond regulatory compliance. They include proactive environmental risk management, supply chain engagement on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Sustainability isn’t just a department; it’s a mindset shared across teams.
Green Teams and Ownership Culture
One of the most inspiring aspects of MGF’s approach is the formation of a cross-functional Green Team. This group collaborate across departments to drive change, moving past siloed efforts to a culture of ownership and shared responsibility. By leveraging EHS Insight’s dashboards and metrics tracking systems, MGF has spearheaded organization-wide data collection, making sustainability metrics visible and actionable.
Innovative Facilities and Energy Efficiency
Masters Gallery Foods’s facilities are a testament to thoughtful design and innovation. The company has invested in:
Geothermal systems with heat recovery and heat pumps, treating the geothermal field like a massive battery, saving substantial annual savings in energy costs. (Designed and installed by Rohde Brothers)
On-site nitrogen generation, eliminating the need for external supply.
An all-electric Class 8 truck, in use for four years.
LED and motion-activated lighting, and HVAC systems that reclaim waste heat from compressors and other equipment.
Despite operating a 300,000 sq ft facility in Oostburg, MGF uses only one-third the energy of a typical building of its size, thanks to smart design and strategic upgrades.
The Business Case for Sustainability
Masters Gallery Foods’s private ownership allows for nimble decision-making and long-term thinking. Their investments in energy efficiency have yielded significant returns, including prescriptive rebates and annual savings. By integrating sustainability into their business strategy, MGF demonstrates that environmental stewardship and operational excellence can go hand in hand. Additionally, Mark Garrigan from Focus on Energy shared how businesses like MGF can leverage incentive programs to reduce upfront costs and accelerate ROI on energy-efficient upgrades.
Engineering Synergies
Mike Rohde and Craig Bahr of Rohde Brothers provided a technical deep dive into the synergistic design of MGF’s HVAC and refrigeration systems. Their approach integrates waste heat recovery, geothermal systems, and glycol chilling to reduce reliance on ammonia refrigeration and maximize energy reuse. These systems not only reduce emissions but also simplify operations and improve safety.
Community Impact and Recognition
Beyond internal operations, MGF’s commitment extends to the community. From donating over $160,000 worth of cheese to local food pantries to raising $152,000 for United Way, their social impact is as strong as their environmental one. Awards like the “Business Friend of the Environment” and Green Masters designation from SBC affirm their leadership in the field.
A Model for Others
The event was not just a tour; it was a learning experience. Attendees left inspired by MGF’s holistic approach, and the valuable peer-to-peer connections fostered through the Sustainable Business Council. As sustainability continues to evolve, Master Gallery Foods offers a compelling model for how businesses can lead boldly and responsibly.
Thank you to the entire team who supported putting this event together!
